COME TO ME by Tina Fairbanks
"Come. Come to me." I awake with a sharp gasp. It was just a dream. A dream that has sent my pulse quickening with the memory of our last encounter a year ago. I stumble out of bed. My legs disobey the urge to remain in slumber, a place where my dream can take possession again and again. Desperate for fresh air I throw the door wide open only to behold a mysterious package. My eyes widen at the size of it.
Deep breaths of fresh air assault my lungs as my usually deft fingers fumble with the wrapping. The desire to unsheathe the package has my heart galloping and my mind racing with curiosity. My fingers close around something silky smooth and bone hard... yet smaller than I expected. A pale pink conch shell, just large enough to need both hands to lift is nestled deep inside. I lift it gently from the box. It feels sleek and cool against my cheek as I glide it slowly to my ear and am jerked suddenly out of my reverie as the sound of crashing waves invade my every sense. Over the cacophony of the ocean choir, just when I can take the pummeling no more, I hear his quiet whisper, "Come. Come to me."
He beckons. Even unexpected at this early hour I cannot resist him. The desire for another ride far outweighs common sense and want for deliberation. Only need dictates now. Need and deliverance. All at once I am rescued from reality and captured by my dream; summoned and freed at the same time. I must go to him.
Stars still glimmer softly in the sky as night fades to dawn. I approach our meeting spot and he's waiting for me, board in hand. Relief washes over me as our eyes meet and see that he's still as eager as I to begin again. The snow is supple beneath my boots, and I am suddenly glad that I just waxed... my board. The sun is just starting to rise above the mountains, and with it my hopes that today is but the first of many days to come.
